UAE starts trials of Russia’s Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine as cases rise – world news

Abu Dhabi has started phase 3 clinical trials of Russia’s Sputnik V Corona 19 vaccine amid a surge in UAE infection, Abu Dhabi Media Office said Thursday.

A human trial, published in October before a recent increase in cases, is initially looking for up to 500 volunteers to be vaccinated at a hospital in Abu Dhabi Emirates.

The vaccine will be given to volunteers twice every 20 days, the statement said.

The UAE is also conducting phase 3 trials of a vaccine developed by China’s National Pharmaceutical Group (Sinopharm). The UAE has approved the vaccine, it is free to anyone who wants it, and the Ministry of Health has given priority to those who are more vulnerable.

Last month, Dubai Emirates began vaccinating people with a vaccine produced by Pfizer and Bio NTec.

UAE authorities, with a population of about 9 million, say 826,301 vaccines were administered without specifying what type as of Tuesday. They added that the UAE aims to vaccinate more than 50{74ca91e3bee52d91843c282edd75c0800a88a3d8744a3a1c83b7ba867058fc3c} of the population in the first quarter of this year.

In October, Sinopharm’s local partner G42 announced plans to start manufacturing the vaccine in 2021.

A G42 official told Reuters on Wednesday that manufacturing plans in the UAE are in progress and more details will be released soon.

The UAE has more than doubled the number of new daily cases over the past 10 days. On Wednesday, the Ministry of Health reported a record of 2,067 new infections daily.

The UAE does not disclose anywhere in the country where infections or deaths occur and has not recently announced new measures to prevent the spread.

In total, the Gulf Arab state recorded 218,766 infections and 689 virus deaths.
